Empty Glass, Empty Boat, Empty Basket, Empty Bowl, Empty Bottle
Story 1: Empty cup mentality
A scholar asked a respected old Zen master about Zen, but he kept talking about his views.
The old Zen master was silent and treated each other with tea. Seeing that the tea was almost full, the old Zen master didn't stop.
The scholar said anxiously: "Don't fall anymore, it will overflow immediately!"
The old Zen master said calmly: "You are like a cup full of water, filled with my own prejudices and opinions, how can I say Zen to you?"
Life requires a mind to embrace all rivers and the spirit of seeking new knowledge.
In the face of the unknown, always have an empty cup, and there will always be good tea and surprises waiting for you.
Story 2: Empty ship
When a person crosses the river by boat, a boat on the opposite side is about to collide.
The man shouted several times, but no one responded, and he cursed the sailor for not having eyesight.
But when he found that it was an empty ship that had hit him, his anger just disappeared immediately.
In many cases, anger is not because of harm to oneself, but a question of mentality.
No self-centeredness, no complaints, and an open-minded life in the world, why can't you be angry?
Story 3: Fetching water from an empty basket
There is a pair of grandparents who wake up early to study every morning.
One day, the grandson asked: "Grandpa, I read like you every day, but I don't understand, and I just forget everything when I close the book. Is it useful to read this way?"
Grandpa didn't say a word, turned around and took a bamboo basket that holds coals and handed it to his grandson: "Go and bring me a basket of water."
The boy tried many times, but every time the water leaked before he ran home.
Seeing the exhausted grandson, grandpa smiled and pointed to the bamboo basket. Only then did the grandson realize that the bamboo basket was different from before, and it became clean from the inside out.
Reading more, even if you don't understand or remember, it will change you subtly, whether it's your appearance or your heart.
As the saying goes, there is no useless work in the world, nor is it empty to draw water from a bamboo basket.
Story 4: The empty bowl story
The young apprentice asked the old Zen master: "Master, I'm so tired, and I'm busy from morning to night. Why is there no accomplishment?"
The old Zen master pondered for a moment, and asked the little apprentice to bring an empty bowl.
The old Zen master put a dozen walnuts in the bowl and asked, "Can you put more walnuts in the bowl?"
Little apprentice: "It's full, I can't let it go."
The old Zen master poured a lot of rice into the crevices of the walnuts, filling the whole bowl, and the little apprentice seemed to understand.
The old Zen master smiled and poured a scoop of water into the bowl. It seemed that all the gaps in the bowl were filled.
The old Zen master asked the little apprentice: "Is it full this time?" The little apprentice didn't dare to answer.
Unexpectedly, the old Zen master put a handful of salt in the water again, and the water did not overflow at all.
A person's life is an empty bowl. If you are filled with many small things first, you won't have time to take care of the big things.
What should be put in the bowl first? What is the walnut of your life?
Story 5: Empty bottle
The fox and monkey hadn't eaten for several days, so they went to pray for the Buddha to give them food.
The Buddha said: "There are two bottles, one is full of food, the other is empty, you can choose one."
The fox thought for a while and said, "I see these two bottles, they are both empty."
A bottle opened: "I am not empty!"
As soon as the fox heard it, he immediately took away another bottle, which was indeed full of delicious food.
Seeing the monkey's puzzled expression, the fox smiled and said, "The bottle with an empty stomach will be afraid of others saying that he is an empty bottle."
A person with an empty stomach is afraid that others will say that he doesn't understand anything.
And the person who has goods in his belly, he won't care what you say about him.
